Bifold Door Dimensions: Finding the Perfect Fit for Your Home
December 16, 2025
News
Getting the dimensions right is an important part of any bifold door project. The good news is that bifold doors are remarkably flexible when it comes to sizing. Unlike many external doors that come in standard sizes, bifold door configurations can be tailored to fit almost any opening, from modest doorways to expansive glass walls. This flexibility is one of the reasons they’ve become such a popular choice for extensions, renovations, and new builds.
At North East Bifolds, we manufacture custom bifold doors for each project. This means we’re not trying to make your opening fit a standard size, instead, we’re creating doors that are the perfect fit for your specific space. Understanding the possibilities and limitations of bifold door dimensions will help you plan your project with confidence.

The Growing Popularity of Bifold Doors
Over the past decade, bifold doors have transformed from a luxury feature into a practical solution that thousands of homeowners choose every year. Their ability to open up wide spaces, flood rooms with natural light, and create a connection between indoor and outdoor areas has made them an ideal solution for modern living.
Part of their appeal is this dimensional flexibility. Where traditional doors come in limited sizes, bifolding doors can be made to suit your exact requirements. This adaptability means they work equally well in compact terraced houses with modest openings and in large detached properties with larger openings.
Understanding Bifold Door Sizes and Dimensions
Width Considerations
At North East Bifolds, we can manufacture bifold doors for openings from 1400mm (1.4 metres) wide up to 8400mm (8.4 metres). That’s a range of sizes that covers virtually any domestic application you’re likely to need.
The width you need will depend on both your available space and how you want to use the doors. The number of panels in your bifold door set will affect both the overall width and how the doors operate.
A 2-panel design is the minimum configuration, suitable for openings from around 1400mm to 2000mm. These work well for modest openings where you want the benefits of bifold doors but don’t need a huge aperture. They’re often used for utility rooms, small dining areas, or compact garden rooms.
Moving up to 3 or 4 door panels is probably the most common choice for standard domestic projects. A 3-panel design typically suits openings of 2400mm to 3000mm, while 4 panels work well from 3000mm to 4200mm. These configurations provide a good balance between opening width and practical operation.
The largest configuration we offer is a 7-panel design, suitable for the most expansive openings from 6600mm up to our maximum of 8400mm. These impressive installations can transform entire rooms, creating an almost complete opening across one wall.

Height Options
The height of the door opening is equally important. We can manufacture bifold doors up to 2500mm (2.5 metres) in height, which covers most domestic applications comfortably.
The standard height for door openings in UK homes is typically around 2100mm, which is what you’ll find in most extensions and new builds. This standard door size works well for most properties and provides good proportions for the doors.
However, some modern extensions and renovations call for taller doors to create a more dramatic effect or to suit higher ceilings. Going up to our maximum of 2500mm creates genuinely impressive doors that make a real statement.
The height of the door will affect several practical aspects. Taller doors let in more natural light and provide better views, but they also need more structural support above them.
Bespoke Manufacturing
Because we manufacture our bifold doors in-house at our Seaham facility, we can create doors to your exact measurements. This bespoke approach means you’re not limited to standard bifold door sizes or trying to make do with the closest available option.
When we visit your property for measurements, we’ll take accurate measurements of your opening and discuss the number of panels that would work best. We’ll also consider factors like which way you want the doors to fold, where you want them to stack when open, and how this will affect your usable space.
Our aluminium frames are engineered for strength and durability while maintaining slim sight lines that maximise the glass area. All our doors feature thermal breaks in the frames and high quality glazing, ensuring energy efficiency regardless of the size you choose.

Getting Your Bifold Door Project Right
The flexibility of bifold door dimensions means there’s always a design that will work perfectly for your home, whether you’re dealing with a compact opening or creating an expansive glass wall.
At North East Bifolds, we’ve fitted bifold doors in properties of all sizes across the North East. The starting point is always a conversation about what you’re trying to achieve, followed by a site visit to take measurements and assess the practical considerations. From there, we can provide accurate costings and timescales for manufacturing and installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the smallest bifold door opening you can create?
We can manufacture 2-panel bifold doors for openings from 1400mm wide. This is about the practical minimum. The height can be as low as you need, though most domestic applications are at least 2100mm tall. We’ll always advise on the right size for your specific opening.
How do I know how many bifold door panels I need?
As a general rule, each panel should be between 700mm and 1200mm wide for practical operation and good proportions. Divide your opening width by this range to get a sense of panel numbers. For example, a 3000mm opening would suit 3 panels (1000mm each) or 4 panels (750mm each). We’ll recommend the best configuration when we measure your space, considering both aesthetics and functionality.
Can bifold doors be made to fit existing openings?
Yes – this is one of the main advantages of external bifold doors. We manufacture to your exact opening dimensions, so whether you have a standard-sized doorway or an unusual opening, we can create doors that fit properly.
